Stacks of filament boxes

Lots of 3D Printers Means Packaging You Didn’t Sign Up For

Ten spools ordered means ten boxes to open, flatten, and stack somewhere.

Then a shipping carton, then a recycling run, and a dumpster bill — or both.

If you’re using refill coils, add the time spent reassembling spools and the filament coil lost every time a refill gets rushed and fails.

None of this shows up on a P&L, but it costs real money, and it happens every single week at scale.

How Much Is This Costing Your Operation?

The packaging problem becomes obvious once it’s put on paper.

The CEO of 3D-Fuel ran these numbers after speaking with print farm operators.

Here’s what he found.

Boxes

A 3D printer farm running 100 printers, each consuming 1kg every two days, running 6 days per week.

That’s:

  • 50 spools per day
  • 300 individual spool boxes to dispose of per week
  • 1200 boxes per month

With FarmFuel:

  • 5 cases per day
  • 30 cases per week
  • 120 cases per month
  • 1080 fewer boxes to handle
Disposal Cost

Dumpster rental for cardboard and plastic can range from $80–$300 per month, depending on location and service frequency.

Recycling runs require staff time and vehicle time. Neither appears on your filament invoice.

Filament Loss

Refill coils fail when rushed.

One tangled or improperly loaded coil can ruin an entire spool.

At $20–$25 per spool, one failed spool per week equals:

$1,000–$1,300 in wasted filament annually.

FarmFuel uses AMS-compatible plastic spools, so no coil handling and no failure point.

“We didn't build FarmFuel to sell more filament. We built it because we kept seeing the same problem and believed there was a simpler way to solve it.”

John Schneider, CEO, 3D-Fuel

Common Questions from Print Farm Operators

We already buy in bulk from another supplier. Why switch?

FarmFuel isn’t asking you to change your filament; we’re offering a solution for all the packaging that comes with it. FarmFuel eliminates individual boxes and provides a closed-loop return system for empty spools.

What filament is included?

Pro PCTG Midnight Black, 1.75mm, 1kg spools. The same engineering-grade Pro PCTG that is sold individually through 3dfuel.com, but now delivered without individual packaging.

Do I need to change how we print?

If you’re already printing individual spools of Pro PCTG, no changes are necessary. This is the same great Pro PCTG, just in different packaging. If you’re new to Pro PCTG, we have already developed filament profiles for the most popular desktop 3D printers found in print farms. Pro PCTG prints similarly to PETG with slightly higher hotend temperatures (250–280°C) and a textured PEI bed at 80°C. No enclosure required.

What happens to the empty spools and desiccant packs?

Place everything back into the case, seal it, apply the prepaid label, and add it to your outbound shipments. 3D-Fuel handles the rest. The only packaging that will be discarded is the vacuum seal bags.

Will additional colors and materials be available?

Launch inventory is limited to Pro PCTG Midnight Black, but additional colors and materials are planned. Early operators will have input into future expansions.

What if a spool arrives damaged?

Contact 3D-Fuel directly at sales@3dfuel.com. Every case is vacuum-sealed and checked before shipping. If something arrives wrong, we’ll make it right.
